5How long can I stay without a visa now?
Since 15 September 2026 most eligible nationalities get 30 days, and Seychelles and Mauritius get 15. The date stamped in your passport is the one that counts. See what changed in September 2026.
Can one extension take me to about two months?
Usually, yes: the 30 days on entry plus one 30-day extension, at the officer's discretion. Our extension guide has the totals for each way of entering.
What can officers ask for at the border?
Proof of funds, onward travel and your accommodation address. The amounts depend on how you enter and are listed in the entry routes compared.
Do I need the arrival card for a short trip?
Yes, every entry needs one. It is free and filed on the official site within three days before you arrive. See the TDAC explained.
I stayed a few days too long. What should I do?
Act the same day, because the fine runs daily until it reaches its cap. Read what an overstay costs before you decide how to leave.
Live in Thailand
5Which long-stay visa fits retirement, marriage or study?
Pick by purpose: the O family for marriage and retirement, the ED for study. Our comparison of Non-Immigrant types shows what each one needs.
Does the visa sticker show how long I may stay?
Not by itself. The permitted stay is the date stamped at the border or on your latest extension, so read that stamp first.
When does the 90-day count start again?
With each new entry into Thailand. Leaving and returning restarts the count, which the 90-day guide explains with a dated example.
Do I need a re-entry permit for a weekend away?
If you want to keep an extension of stay, yes. Without it the extension is normally cancelled when you leave. See single or multiple permits.
What is the TM30 and who files it?
It tells immigration where you stay and is normally filed by your host, such as a hotel or landlord. Offices often ask for proof of it, see the TM30 explained.
Work and business
4Can I work on a retirement or marriage stay?
No. Those stays do not allow work, and a job needs the right visa plus a work permit. Start with work permit and B visa.
What does an employer have to meet?
The company must be registered and meet capital and staffing rules before it can hire foreigners. The usual benchmarks and the exceptions are set out in the same guide, and we confirm the current figures with you.
I work remotely for clients abroad. Which visa is for me?
Usually the DTV rather than a B visa and work permit. See how the DTV compares and our DTV service.
Do you help set up a Thai company?
Yes. What is realistic depends on the activity and the ownership structure, so we outline the options in a pre-check. See company registration.
Long-term programmes
3DTV, LTR or SMART: how do I choose?
Match the programme to your activity: remote work for the DTV, wealth or skills for the LTR, and start-up founders for the SMART track. The SMART guide explains why the former investor and executive tracks are reported as closed.
How long does a DTV last?
Reports describe five years of validity with up to 180 days per entry. Funds, age and the mission rules are in the DTV key facts.
Is the DTV a way to study Thai?
Language schools are reported as no longer eligible, so students are pointed to the ED visa. Check the ED visa page.
Reporting and licences
5How is the 90-day report different from the TM30?
You file the 90-day report to confirm your address, while your host files the TM30 about where you stay. Both can be asked for at the same counter.
Can I file my 90-day report online?
Often, inside the window, but the system can reject a filing, so keep a fallback. See online or in person.
What if I miss the date?
File as soon as you notice. A late report can be fined from 2,000 THB, and this guide shows what changes with how late you are.
Do tourists need a Thai driving licence?
Generally no: a valid home licence plus an international permit with the right category is the visitor's route. Residents are expected to hold a Thai licence, see IDP or Thai licence.
Does my international permit cover a scooter?
Only if both the permit and your home licence show the motorcycle category; a permit for cars alone does not include scooters.
