Retirement visa with a spouse or child: what applies

A retirement visa is personal. Here is what that means for a partner or a child who wants to stay with you.

Quick answer

A Thai retirement stay covers the main holder, and a spouse or child is not covered automatically. A partner aged 50 or older can qualify on their own. Others may use a dependent stay linked to the main holder or a different basis such as a family-based Non-Immigrant O. Which route applies depends on age, relationship and nationality, so check before you apply.

Couples often arrive with one plan for two people. The visa system treats them as two cases that happen to live together.

Figures and procedures in this guide were checked at the time of writing and can change. Always confirm with the official source or in your free pre-check.

Spouse aged 50 or older

A partner who also meets the age and financial conditions can apply for their own retirement stay. Each person then shows their own proof, and the two files are independent.

Spouse or child who does not qualify alone

A younger spouse or a child cannot use the retirement basis. Options can include a dependent stay linked to the main holder, where the rules allow it, or a family-based stay. See the overview of non-immigrant visa types and the Non-Immigrant O service.

Routes by person

Embassy pages describe the options below. Whether a dependent Non-O works for a younger spouse depends on the consulate, so ask the one that will decide.

Married to a Thai citizen

If your spouse is a Thai citizen, a marriage-based stay is usually the better fit than retirement, with different documents and financial rules. We compare both for you.

Keep the files in step

Separate files mean separate dates: extensions, 90-day reports and re-entry permits can differ per person. Our retirement visa service tracks all of them in one calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Does my retirement visa cover my wife or husband?

Not automatically. A spouse aged 50 or older can apply on their own, others need a different route.

What about children?

Children need a basis of their own, such as a dependent or family-based stay. We check the options.

Is marriage to a Thai better than retirement?

Often, but it depends on your documents and finances. We compare both in the pre-check.

Do we file together?

Each person has a separate file, though we can prepare them together.

Can a spouse under 50 join me on a retirement stay?

Embassy pages describe the O-A, the O-X for eligible nationalities, or a family-based Non-O. Whether a dependent Non-O works depends on the consulate.

Until what age can children be covered?

For the O-X, until age 20. Older children need another basis.
