Lost or stolen passport in Thailand: what happens to your visa

A lost passport does not cancel your stay, but it does not move your visa either. Here is who is involved and what to watch.

Quick answer

If your passport is lost or stolen in Thailand, your permitted stay stays valid, but the visa and entry records remain tied to the old passport until immigration moves them to the new one. The police, your embassy and immigration are all involved, the transfer does not extend your stay, and your original expiry date still applies.

Losing a passport is stressful enough. The part people miss is that the stay, the visa and the entry record stay attached to the old document, and the dates keep running.

Figures in this guide were checked at the time of writing and can change. Always confirm with the official source or in your free pre-check.

What a lost passport does to your stay

Your permitted stay does not end because the passport is gone. But a replacement passport proves who you are, it does not carry over the stamps, the visa or the entry record. Thai immigration has to move them, and that can only happen while your permitted stay is still valid. The transfer does not extend your stay, so the original expiry date and conditions still apply.

The usual order of steps, as reported

Thai embassy guidance and visa advisers describe the order below. Check the details with your own embassy and with the Phuket office.

Replacing a lost passport and moving the visa
StepWhat to doKeep
1. Police reportReport the loss at a police station and ask for several copiesCopies of the report
2. EmbassyApply for a replacement passport or an emergency travel document; if you have no embassy in Thailand, an emergency certificate can be requested from the Department of Consular AffairsReceipt and the new document
3. Embassy letterAsk the embassy for a letter asking Thai immigration to place your latest stamps in the new passportThe letter
4. ImmigrationTake the new passport, police report, letter and a copy of the old passport to immigration; moving stamps is reported to be freeProof of the new stamp date

A sticker-type multiple-entry visa in the old passport may not be transferable, while an e-Visa can usually be reprinted. Ask early.

Why the dates matter

An extension cannot last longer than the validity of your passport, so a replacement document with a short validity can limit what you get. If your permitted stay is close to its end while you wait for documents, the risk is an overstay, which is fined. See overstaying in Thailand and act before the date passes.

Where it gets complicated

For a long-stay holder, the old passport also carries the yearly extension, the re-entry permit, the 90-day report record and the TM30 address confirmation. Each of them has to follow the new passport, and offices ask for different papers. In Phuket, extensions are handled at the main immigration office in Phuket Town. Confirm what they want before you go. See the Phuket immigration office.

Extensions without a passport

You normally need a passport to extend. If your date is near, the safest plan is to get the replacement document first and extend with it. Some people report that immigration accepted a police report plus an embassy letter for a short extension, but others report that it did not work, so do not count on it. An overstay is fined at 500 THB per day.

Before you book a flight

Find out how long the replacement document and the transfer will take before you book a flight you cannot change. If you travel on an extended stay, make sure a re-entry permit is in place.

Prevent it next time

Keep digital copies of the passport photo page, your visa, the entry stamp and your latest extension stamp, and save your next deadlines on your phone. It makes every later step easier.

How we can help

Send us a copy of your police report and your last stamps. We tell you what the immigration office is likely to ask for, in which order, and we can attend for you. We do not promise a result on a stay that is about to expire.

A false loss report backfires

Local news has reported foreign visitors who were blacklisted after claiming a lost passport to avoid an overstay. Report the true situation. Early honesty is the cheapest route in every case.
